Dmitri Sergejewitsch Kusmin ( Russian Дмитрий Сергеевич Кузьмин ; born May 19, 1966 in Stavropol , Soviet Union ) is a Russian and European politician . From 2002 to 2008 he was mayor of the southern Russian city of Stavropol with a short break. He is chairman of the small party European Love Party , which is running for the first time in the 2019 European elections in Germany .

Life

Kuzmin was considered one of the pioneers of the New Economy in Stavropol at the end of the 1980s . At the age of 26 he became a member of the board of directors of Stavropolsnab AG . From 1993 to 1997 he was chairman of the board of directors of the Stavropol equipment factory.

In 1997 he was elected member of the State Duma of the Stavropol region for the Just Russia party. In 2002 he was appointed mayor by the Stavropol City Council and confirmed in a direct election in 2003. The ruling United Russia party tried to exclude Kuzmin from the candidacy shortly before the election, but a court finally allowed his candidacy. From 2006 he represented Russia in the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe .

In March 2007, Just Russia was again the strongest party in the regional elections in the Stavropol region. Stavropol was the only region where United Russia , the party of Russian President Vladimir Putin , did not become the strongest party. The candidacy of Kuzmin in the Russian parliamentary elections in 2007 was forbidden by a court as he was accused of improper means. According to projections, Kuzmin was able to win the mayoral election on November 22nd, 2007 despite opposition from United Russia . However, the election was declared invalid. On December 4, 2007, eight preliminary investigations were opened against Kuzmin, among other things for embezzlement and abuse of office . Kuzmin himself had left Russia the night before. He was later found guilty (in absentia) on several counts.

On April 1, 2015, the international arrest warrant against Kuzmin was overturned after several European courts had found in previous years that the charges against him were politically motivated.

On April 15, 2017, Kusmin registered the Parti Europeen L'AMOUR (German: European Party of Love ) in Paris , France . National parties were formed in Germany and Austria, among others. The party will run for the European elections in Germany in 2019 .
