Do, Do, Do is a song written by George Gershwin (music) and Ira Gershwin (lyrics) and published in 1926.

background

The Gershwin brothers wrote Do, Do, Do for the musical comedy Oh, Kay! where she was introduced by Gertrude Lawrence and Oscar Shaw . The song is written in E flat major in the form ABA'C ; similar to the other songs from Oh, Kay! (such as Clap Yo 'Hands ) is the pentatonic theme; the melodic rhythm consists of quarter notes with occasional dotted fourths and quarter and eighth notes on the fourth beat. The chorus begins with Do, do, do / What you've done, done, done / before, baby . The triple pattern of the lyrics is striking (I know, know, know what a beau, beau, beau should do ) and the excessive use of the word baby .

First recordings and later cover versions

The first musicians to record the song from 1926 included George Gershwin (piano solo, November 1926), Gertrude Lawrence (Victor 20331) and Helen Morgan . The discographer Tom Lord lists a total of 15 (as of 2015) cover versions in the field of jazz , u. a. by Benny Carter , Joe Venuti , Cannonball Adderley , The Three Sounds , Dave McKenna, and Philippe Combelle . Doris Day and Gordon MacRae sang the song in the 1950 film Tea for Two ; Gogi Grant was vocal double for Ann Blyth in The Helen Morgan Story (1957) and Julie Andrews sang Do, Do, Do in the Gertrude Lawrence biopic Star! (1968).
