Doğan Güzel , also Dogan Guzel , is a Kurdish - Turkish draftsman, illustrator and caricaturist . He is the creator of the Kurdish cartoon character Qirix (Kırık).

Life

Güzel worked for the pro-Kurdish daily Özgür Gündem, which was published from May 1992 . He developed the cartoon character Qirix (Kırık). The Qirix stories were published daily in Özgür Gündem and, after its closure, in the follow-up newspaper Özgür Ülke. They acted as satirical companions of the violent conflict in the Kurdish regions of Turkey.

The newspaper Özgür Gündem was repeatedly subjected to reprisals in Turkey for allegedly violating anti-terror laws and promoting separatism, there were numerous murders of its journalists and salespeople, as well as attacks on publishers. After a bomb attack on the Istanbul and Ankara editorial offices in December 1994, it was finally closed.

On July 31, 1998, Güzel was arrested and charged with allegedly denigrating and endangering the state and the armed forces. The public prosecutor's office relied on four caricatures published in Özgür Gündem between May 1993 and October 1993, in which Güzel satirically using the expression “lax Turkish republic”. Güzel was sentenced to 10 months each for these caricatures, a total of 40 months' imprisonment. According to Law 4454 of August 28, 1999, which allows journalists to suspend sentences and trials for three years, as well as massive protests by international journalists' associations (including Reporters Without Borders ), Doğan Güzel was pardoned by President Süleyman Demirel and on 16 September 1999, released together with the writer İsmail Beşikçi, who was sentenced to over 100 years in prison .

On April 23, 2000, the governorate of the OHAL state of emergency (comprised some south-eastern regions of Anatolia) banned the distribution of the Kurdish-language humor magazine Pine , for which Güzel had also worked. Güzel was arrested again.

Because of the legal proceedings against him, Güzel left Turkey and now lives in Spain. Since January 2006 he has been drawing weekly for the PKK- related daily newspaper Yeni Özgür Politika .

Doğan Güzel has also made illustrations, for example for the historical novel “Ataların Karşılaşması” by Cemal Reşid Ahmed ( ISBN 9789757112204 ) published in 1998 .
