General

The song was written by Donald Fagen and Walter Becker . Fagen sings the track, which was recorded in August 1972. The single version differed from the album version, shortened the intro and outro and omitted the organ solo.

Released in 1972, the song made its debut on November 18, 1972 on the Billboard Hot 100 and reached number 6 on the US charts in 1973. When it was released in 1972, the song was labeled "Trad" (for traditional), although it was written by Becker and Fagen.

The melody includes an electric sitar solo by Denny Dias . Donald Fagen's organ solo was played on a Yamaha YC-30 with a pitch bender .

reception

Stewart Mason writes on Allmusic :

“Steely Dan's first hit single and to this day the song that is most associated with the duo. ... 'Do It Again' is remarkably bizarre material for a top ten radio hit. It's a six-minute shuffle based on a sleepy bossa nova rhythm ... and lacks any kind of bridge . It contains not one, but two long solos , the first on an electric sitar (an instrument that was hopelessly out of fashion in 1972 ...). "
