The Doberaner Platz is a historic triangular square in the Hanseatic city of Rostock in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern . It is located west of the historic old town on the former country road to Bad Doberan and was created when the city was expanded after the start of industrialization around 1850.

Today the square forms the central prelude to the trendy district of the Kröpeliner-Tor-Vorstadt (KTV) and is the interface to the city center . At the same time, it acts as an important hub for local public transport . Up to 15,000 people get on, off and transfer here every day.

history

After Rostock's population had tripled from the beginning of the 19th century to 1870, apartments had to be created for the workers of the developing industrial companies. For this purpose, areas west of the historic old town were developed. In the garden, park and arable land that existed here, the first streets were built, which were still based on the established path structure (today's Wismarsche Straße, Bergstraße, Barnstorfer Weg). Doberaner Platz soon developed into the intersection of several streets and a traffic junction. Shops, bars and cultural institutions emerged.

Revitalization 2005 to 2006

In January 2004, the Hanseatic City of Rostock launched a competition which, in addition to Doberaner Platz, also included the redesign of Gertrudenplatz and Am Brink . The entire, previously traffic-ridden area has been converted into a traffic-calmed zone.

An essential prerequisite was created with the redesign of the main transport network. Due to the construction of the connecting road between Schröderplatz and Warnowufer , directly east of Doberaner Platz, the square was closed to private traffic. This left the traffic areas free for a comprehensive design and functional upgrade.

The “Am Brink” area was designed as a modern garden area with play facilities and street catering. As a classic neighborhood square, it forms a quiet counterpoint to Doberaner Platz. The “Doberaner Platz” was assigned the function of the district-related main square and accordingly structured as a market, communication and festival space, flexible and open to use. The design highlight of the square is a free-floating cable network with specially designed light rings. They give the place its unmistakable face. The “Gertrudenplatz”, which is divided into two by the street widening, has been upgraded in its importance as a forecourt by the buildings that characterize it partially. The placement of new plantings puts the square back in context with the listed facility of the Gertrudenklinik.
