The island is named for the Dobu Rural LLG (Local Level Government) Area in the Esa'Ala district of the Milne Bay Province . The Dobu Rural LLG comprises the northwest part of Normanby and the east part of Fergusson.

The culture of the residents was described by Reo Fortune and Ruth Benedict in the 1930s, but the image of a very warlike society drawn here has been called into question by recent work by the ethnologist Susanne Kuehling .
