Susanne Kuehling
Susanne Kuehling is a German anthropologist and ethnologist . She is a professor at the University of Regina in Canada.
research
Kuehling is interested in researching small matrilineal communities with matrilocal property allocation, especially in Micronesia and Melanesia . She obtained her MA at the University of Göttingen in 1989 with a thesis on the chewing of betel in Melanesia. She then studied from 1994 to 1998 at the Australian National University and received scholarships from the ANU and the Friedrich Ebert Foundation . She completed her scientific training in Australia in 1999 with a thesis on the kula ritual of exchanging gifts on the island of Dobu, part of Papua New Guinea . She taught at Heidelberg University for five years before moving to Canada in 2008. For field studies she stayed on the islands of Dobu and Woleai in Micronesia from 1992–1994, 1997 and 2004 . Her work on Dobu mainly explored the practice of sharing and keeping to oneself in the island economy, her more recent research has focused on the relationship of islanders to their land in Micronesia and communities of migrants in Guam and Saipan . Her areas of interest are also the ethnography of New Guinea and Micronesia, the anthropology of gender and landscape, and the history of anthropology.
reception
In her work on Dobu Island, Kuehling questions the image of Dobu drawn by Reo Fortune and Ruth Benedict as a paranoid and warlike society. In her presentation she includes the economic situation of the islanders as workers in indenture contracts and their peripheral position in the global economy and paints a less static picture of their society. The more positive portrayal was received very positively by the islanders, who were not at all informed about their portrait as the "villain" in older studies, but has so far received less attention in university ethnology than Benedict's older studies.
In 2015, Kuehling received an award from the University of Regina for innovative teaching methods.
