Woleai , also called Furarappu , earlier: Oleai , Uleai or Wolea , is an inhabited atoll in the Pacific . It is located in the east of Yap , a Micronesian island area which, together with four other island areas, forms the current state of the Federated States of Micronesia .

In a broader sense, Wolei or the Woleai denotes a group of atolls, which in addition to the Woleai atoll also include Eauripik , Ifaluk , Faraulep , Elato and Lamotrek .

geography

The atoll is shaped like a figure eight. It extends from east to west over a length of 11.5 km. The maximum width of seven kilometers is found in the western area. At the central bottleneck it is only 2.5 km wide. The total area of ​​the atoll is 48 km². Of this, 4.5 km² (according to other sources only 3.9 km²) are on the 18 islands and 29 km² on the lagoon . A shallow coral bank divides the lagoon into two basins, East Lagoon and West Lagoon. West Lagoon is about twice the size of East Lagoon and has greater depths of 30 to 50 meters.

The southern edge of the atoll has greater depths and only a few islands, including Falalis, the southernmost island of the atoll.

population

The atoll had a population of 1081 in 2008. At the 2000 census there were 975. In 1970, 1284 people were counted, 370 of them on the main island of Falealop (Falalap).

Woleaian and English are spoken on Woleai .

administration

The atoll forms the third electoral district in Yap state, one of a total of five electoral districts.

Seven main islands are specifically mentioned in the Yap State Code.

Of these, Falalop (Falalap), Mariyang (Mariyang), Paliau and Tahoilap (Tohoilap) form the municipality of Woleai Islands in the eastern part of the atoll , while Falalus (south), Sileap and Woteggai (northwest) form separate municipalities.

The atoll is in the time zone UTC + 10 .

history

During the Second World War , the atoll served as a command landing site for the Imperial Japanese Army .
