Fais (also Astrolabe, Feis, Feys and Tromelin; English : Fais Island ) is a Pacific island that geographically belongs to the Carolines and politically to the state of Yap of the Federated States of Micronesia .
geography
Fais is a fertile and inhabited coral island raised approx. 20 m above sea level , so not an atoll in the true sense of the word. The island is far away from larger land masses in the Pacific Ocean , about 70 km southeast of the Ulithi Atoll . The closest island is Gielap (Giil'ab) on the Zohhoiiyoru Bank (68 km to the west) belonging to Ulithi Municipality . The closest inhabited island is Falalop Island (82 km west), just east of Ulithi Atoll .
In the 1987 census year, Fais had a population of 254, which increased to 301 by the 1994 census, only to drop to 215 by 2000.
history
Fais was probably discovered by Diego de Roda and Gomez de Siqueira in 1525 , later rediscovered by Leogrant de Tromelin .
During the Second World War , the island was occupied by US troops on January 1, 1945 without a fight.
Others
The alternative name Tromelin should not be confused with the island of Tromelin , which is located in the Indian Ocean near Réunion .
