Satawal is a small island in the Federated States of Micronesia and the easternmost inhabited island in the state of Yap . Only the uninhabited island of Pikelot lies further east within the state of Yap, a good 100 km to the northeast. Pikelot is included in the municipality of Satawal, as is West Fayu , an uninhabited island 84 km to the northwest.

geography

Geographically, Satawal belongs to the Carolines Archipelago . It is a flat coral island that reaches a height of four meters above sea level. A small scrub-covered mangrove basin in the east is evidence of an earlier lagoon . So it's a former atoll .

The island is largely forested with coconut trees . There are also breadfruit trees . The only village is in the north.

population

Satawal had 531 inhabitants at the 2000 census. In 1970 there were only 93.

language

The dialect Satawal , named after the island, is very similar to Chuukesian .

economy

The inhabitants live mainly from fishing and agriculture . They mainly grow coconut , breadfruit, and taro .

Tourism plays a rather subordinate role. In the absence of a suitable anchorage, the passengers of the cruise ships that occasionally pass by have to be brought to the island's beach in motorized inflatable boats.

administration

The municipality ( municipality ) Satawal includes the uninhabited atoll Piagailoe lying km north-west 82, and also uninhabited island Pikelot that once to Lamotrek , and later Puluwat (in present-day state of Chuuk belonged).
