The atoll Sorol is located in the west of the state of Yap of the Federated States of Micronesia and belongs to the archipelago of the Carolines in the Pacific Ocean .
geography
The atoll is 150 km south of Ulithi and 250 southeast of the main island of Yap .
The elongated atoll measures 12.5 km from east to west, and is up to 3.5 km wide. Nine islands lie along the northern fringing reef, according to other information even 17, but only around four islands can be seen on the ISS photo . The shorter southern fringing reef is lower and narrower than the northern fringing reef and has two passages into the lagoon . The lagoon is up to 45 meters deep.
The total area of the atoll is 20 km², including the 7 km² lagoon. The land area of the nine islands is just under one square kilometer. Sorol has been uninhabited since the early 1980s.
Among others, the following islands are located on the fringing reef, from west to east:

- Bigelor ( 8 ° 7 '17 " N , 140 ° 25' 24" O )
Only the four largest islands have vegetation.

During an expedition in 2011, 14 species of reptiles were found on the atoll:

- Chelonia mydas (Linnaeus)
- Eretmochelys imbricata (Linnaeus)
- Geckos
- Gehyra insulensis (Girard)
- Gehyra oceanica (Lesson)
- Lepidodactylus lugubris species complex (with Lepidodactylus lugubris , Lepidodactylus moestus and a hitherto undescribed, bisexual species)
- Skinks
- Emoia atrocostata (Lesson)
- Emoia boettgeri (star field)
- Emoia caeruleocauda (De Vis)
- Emoia cyanura (Lesson)
- Emoia impar (Werner)
- Lamprolepis smaragdina (Lesson)
- Monitor lizards
- Varanus indicus (Daudin)

Sorol is a separate municipality municipality , although its population is shown in some statistical publications together with that of Fais .
