Elato is an atoll in the central Pacific Ocean . Geographically, it belongs to the Carolines Archipelago , politically it belongs to the state of Yap of the Federated States of Micronesia .
geography
Elato is located in the east of the state of Yap, 9 km west of the Lamotrek atoll and 36 km southeast of Olimarao . It is over 900 km away from the Yap Islands in the west of the state. It is connected to the neighboring atoll Lamolior by a coral bank 1.5 km long and about 20 m below the water surface , so that it forms a double atoll with it. Elato itself is an elongated atoll in the shape of an "8" with a length of 14 km and a maximum width of 2 km. The two lagoons together have an area of about 7.5 km² and reach a depth of 27 m (northern lagoon) and 29 m (southern lagoon). The total area of the atoll is about 11 km², whereas the land area is only about 0.5 km². On the fringing reef of the atoll are three islands, Falipi in the south, Kari in the center and Elato , the main and only inhabited island, in the northeast.
administration
Elato forms - together with the uninhabited Lamolior - a municipality ( municipality ) of the same name with 96 inhabitants (as of 2000), all of whom belong to the Roman Catholic faith. Within Yap, only the Ngulu Atoll has fewer inhabitants. Elato belongs to the fifth and easternmost electoral district of the state of Yap.
