The Atoll Olimarao lies in the east of the State of Yap of the Federated States of Micronesia and thus belongs to the archipelago of the Caroline Islands in the Pacific Ocean .

geography

Olimarao is an uninhabited atoll 35 km northwest of Elato Atoll , the closest landmass. It is located about 860 km southeast of the main island of the state of Yap.

With a total area of 11 km², the atoll is about 5 km long and 3 km wide and encloses a lagoon of 6 km². There are only two flat coral islands ( Motus ) on the atoll, which together have an area of 0.2 km² (20 hectares): the much larger Olimarao Island in the northeast, and the only 2.4 hectare Falipi Island in the southwest. Both islands are forested, with coconut palms predominating.

In the south of the reef rim there are two shallow passages into the lagoon.

administration

Olimarao administratively belongs to Elato and thus to the fifth electoral district of the state of Yap, one of the total of five electoral districts.

natural reserve

Olimarao Conservation Area covers the entire atoll. The area aims to protect the breeding areas of sea turtles , coconut crabs and sea birds .
