The Dodhara Chandani Bridge is a suspension bridge for pedestrians over the Mahakali in the far west of Nepal, which is only 1.4 km wide at this point .

location

It connects the village (or the Village Development Committee - VDC) of Dodhara in the district of Kanchanpur in the Mahakali administrative zone , which lies between the Indian border and the river, with the VDC Chandani on the other side of the river. Dodhara is completely cut off from the actual national territory of Nepal by the Mahakali River, the bridge is the only connection between Dodhara and the other regions of Nepal.

The bridge is about 5.5 km south or below the Indian border and about 8 km below the Mahakali Dam. To the south and downstream, the Indian border is around 11.4 km away.

description

The Dodhara Chandani Bridge is a series of four suspension bridges with eight pylons , which are anchored to large anchor blocks on both banks and to three common anchor blocks in the river bed. The webs between the 32.72 m high pylons have a span of 225.40 m, the webs between the anchors and the pylons have a span of almost 70 m. The bridges are slightly curved upwards. This results in a series of arches with spans of 70 + 225.40 + 70 + 70 + 225.40 + 70 + 70 + 225.40 + 70 + 70 + 225.40 + 70 with a total length of 1452.96 m plus the approximately 20 m long anchor blocks on the banks.

The bridge consists of the steel pylons and essentially of wire ropes. The hangers are thin metal rods that are connected with eyes . The 1.60 m wide bridge deck is a stable metal grille. On both sides, ropes serve as railings, which are connected to the bridge deck by wire mesh. Diagonal ropes between the railings and the longitudinal ropes underneath are used for stiffening, as are some stay cables from the pylons to the bridge deck. Side ropes anchored in the river bed dampen the fluctuations.

The bridge is intended as a pedestrian bridge, but is also used by bicycles and light motorbikes, which can also pass each other when fully occupied - as everywhere in Nepal, when driving on the left .
