Dollan Aqua Center

The Dollan Aqua Center , also Dollan Baths , is a swimming pool in the Scottish town of East Kilbride in the Council Area of South Lanarkshire . It is named after Patrick Dollan who was once Lord Provost of Glasgow . In 1994 the Dollan Aqau Center was included in the list of 60 most important Scottish post-war buildings. In 2002 the structure was included in the Scottish Monument Lists in the highest monument category A.

history

As early as the development plan of 1958, an area in the city center was earmarked for the construction of a bathing establishment. A decision from 1961 provided for the relocation to Town Center Park . It was there that construction of the Dollan Aqua Center began three years later. However, a more prominent position on a hilltop was chosen. On September 24, 1964, the groundbreaking ceremony was carried out by George Brown , Deputy Leader of the Labor Party .

The design was provided by the Scottish architect Alexander Buchanan Campbell , who is responsible for numerous public buildings in Glasgow and the immediate vicinity. His design was inspired by the Kokuritsu Yoyogi Kyōgijō , the swimming pool for the 1964 Summer Olympics and the Stadio del Nuoto for the 1960 Summer Olympics . Construction of the facility, completed in 1965, cost £ 600,000. Originally designed with a competitive focus in mind, the Dollan Baths were converted to meet the needs of a public bathing establishment in the mid-1990s for £ 4.5 million. Renovations were completed in 2008 at a cost of £ 9 million.

description

The striking structure takes up an inner area of 76 m × 29 m. The basic structure of the roof structure is formed by five prestressed concrete arches with lengths of 99 m. They split on both sides of the building and are anchored in the ground at an angle of 30 °. Four elliptical roof elements are suspended in these arches . Just like the side surfaces, the elliptical roof finishes are glazed.

There are two swimming pools inside, a 14.6 m wide main pool with a maximum depth of 4.3 m and a non-swimmer pool (9.8 m × 4.9 m). A grandstand for 600 spectators is set up on one side. The length of the main basin is 165  feet (50.29 m). Since the dimensions do not correspond to those of a competition track (50 m × 12 m), the pool was reduced in size in the 1990s. In addition, a barrier was introduced that allows the basin to be divided in half at right angles. With a height-adjustable pool floor, separate swimming areas can be set up. In order to meet the demands of family visitors, the formerly gender-separated changing areas have been combined into one large area.
