Saplous dolmen
The dolmen of Saplous 1 + 2 (also called dolmen of Cans 1 + 2) are located south of the hamlet of Surguières, northeast of near Gaillac-d'Aveyron , in the Aveyron department in France . In France, dolmen is the generic term for Neolithic megalithic structures of all kinds (see: French nomenclature ).
Dolmen 2 is a double dolmen, consisting of two adjacent chambers that measure more than 7.0 meters in total. Still in an oval tumulus sits a dolmen, classified as a Monument Historique since 1995, with an approximately 4.0 meter long rounded capstone on a 4.0 meter long 1.5 meter wide chamber that opens to the east.
A little further on are the remains of Dolmen 1. It is under a tree by the route. Only a few structures have been preserved and are visible under the blackberries. The dolmens in the Aveyron often occur in groups and 92% of all dolmens are made of limestone slabs .
