Domenico Spinelli, Prince of San Giorgio , also Sangiorgio Spinelli (* 1788 in Frasso , † April 10, 1863 in Naples ), was an Italian collector and archaeologist.

Domenico Spinelli, succeeding Francesco Maria Avellino, led the excavations in the Vesuvius region from 1850 to 1863 , particularly in Pompeii and Herculaneum . In 1850 he was also elected an honorary member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences . His successor as the chief excavator of the Vesuvius region was Giuseppe Fiorelli , with whom the modern era of excavations in Pompeii began. For several years he was the President of the Accademia Ercolanese .

As a collector, Spinelli was primarily interested in early Roman coinage , but also brought together a large collection of medieval Italian coins, for example. He was particularly regarded as a specialist in the Arab- Kufic coinage of Sicily and southern Italy.
