The Dominican winery C. von Nell-Breuning is a traditional winery in Kasel in the Ruwertal , which is run by the von Nell-Breuning family and produces wines from the Mosel wine-growing region (previously: Mosel-Saar-Ruwer). The winery has been managed by Dr. Carmen von Nell-Breuning. The winery has had the name of Nell-Breuning since 1980, when Oswald von Nell-Breuning , the well-known theologian and social philosopher (" Nestor of the Catholic Social Doctrine ") handed over his name affix to his nephew and godson, Christoph von Nell - then head of the traditional winery Has. The manager and cellar master is Günter Gindorf.

Today the winery also includes the Pauliner Hof country inn with an attached restaurant in a former monastery from the 18th century.

history

Pauliner Hof, former monastery property, in Kasel

Christian Nell, more precisely Peter Christian von Nell, founded the winemaking tradition in the family in 1670. In 1709 he was ennobled for his services. In addition to viticulture, he also ran his father's business as a raftsman and timber dealer on the Rhine. As a skilled businessman, he quickly recognized the synergies between the two businesses and even then exported his wines to Holland, which allowed the wine business to grow successfully. The wines became known on a large scale early on. The wealth they achieved enabled the family to lead a luxurious life, including in a palace in Perl , where Napoleon is said to have been invited once.

In the course of secularization in 1803 the family had the opportunity to acquire the St. Matthias Abbey and extensive estates with various vineyards. The property that had meanwhile been acquired in Kasel was also further enlarged.

Locations

The main location is the six-hectare "Kaseler Dominikanerberg" (steep slope on the south-facing slope), which is the sole property of the winery and where only Riesling is grown. Other locations are "Kaseler Kehrnagel" , "Kaseler Hitzlay" and " Kaseler Nies'chen " . The only Pinot Noir red wine in this area is grown from the latter. The wines have been awarded numerous gold medals and the state award of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate.

According to the winery, "the greats of this world" drank their wines. The last Tsar of Russia ( Nicholas II ), US President Gerald Ford , Mao Zedong , Queen Margarethe II of Denmark, Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi and French President Mitterrand are named by name . The wine was also served by various Federal Chancellors on state visits and world economic summits. 1989 the winery won the only gold medal for Germany at the international wine competition in Bordeaux. In 2002 the winery received the State Prize of Honor from the Rhineland-Palatinate Chamber of Agriculture for its outstanding overall performance.

sparkling wine

The winery also has the oldest sparkling wine manufacturer in the Ruwertal, where the sparkling wine is traditionally shaken by hand.
