Nell is the name of a Rhenish and Bohemian noble family .

history

The family name is said to be derived from the Irish family name O'Neill. The family came from Ireland around 1500, first to the vicinity of Koblenz , and later to the Trier area . The family of von Nell begins with Christian Nell , first documented in 1643, a raftsman and timber merchant in Wallersheim near Koblenz. On April 25, 1709 the family received the knightly imperial and hereditary Austrian nobility as von Nell zu Thonemacher .

The family consists of two lines, a Bohemian and a Rhenish line. The Bohemian line received the imperial knighthood on February 22, 1717 with the addition of Edler von Nellenberg . On May 23, 1821 she was raised to the status of Austrian baron .

The Rhenish Line received the Prussian count on August 16, 1824 . In the 19th and early 20th centuries, the family owned the abbey buildings of St. Matthias in Trier. Oswald von Nell-Breuning took care of the return of the monastery property to the Benedictine community of St. Matthias in Trier. On October 24, 1910, the Prussian government merged names and coats of arms with those of Breuning as von Nell-Breuning . In order to prevent the von Breuning family name from becoming extinct , after his uncle intervened, the King of Prussia gave Oswald the double name of Nell-Breuning by means of naming and inheritance law. Since Oswald remained celibate as a chaplain of the Jesuits (1890–1991), he transferred the double name to his godmother in Kasel / Ruwer , Christoph von Nell (-Breuning), who owns the archive on family history, by order of the state government of Rhineland-Palatinate .

The coat of arms of the Bohemian line is quartered and shows in the 1st and 4th fields in red a golden angled barley ear, in the 2nd and 3rd fields in blue a water-splashing dolphin swimming in the sea.
