Donald "Don" Miller (born August 12, 1971 in Pearland , Texas ) is an American Christian author , public speaker and thought leader. He lives in Portland , Oregon .

Life

At the age of 21, Miller left his hometown of Pearland, Texas, and moved to Portland , Oregon . His first book, Prayer and the Art of Volkswagen Maintenance, is about this road trip across the country. The book was initially hardly advertised, but successfully republished in 2005 with the title Through Painted Deserts . During this time Miller worked as an editor for the Christian online magazine "roadsearching.com" and was the owner of the small publishing house Coffee House Books , which published textbooks for home schooling .

The work Blue Like Jazz - Nonreligious Thoughts On Christian Spirituality ( Eng . "Blue Like Jazz - Unpious thoughts on Christian spirituality") became a 2003 bestseller. In 2004, Miller published Searching For God Knows What , which explores how the life of Jesus exemplifies the human personality. To Own A Dragon was released in 2006 . In this book, Miller explores what it's like to grow up without a father. This topic also preoccupied him, so that he founded the “Mentoring Project” (formerly “Belmont Foundation”), a non-profit organization that, in partnership with local communities, places young men without fathers on mentors. In the fall of 2009, Miller published A Million Miles in a Thousand Years - What I Learned While Editing My Life (Eng. "A million miles in a thousand years - What I learned while rewriting my life"). That same year began production of All Things Converge , a small group DVD series for which Miller interviewed well-known Christian authors and theologians. The first three DVDs in the series were released in late 2009.

Miller is also a founding member of the Burnside Writers Collective, a group of writers who write for an online magazine. Miller is known for viewing the Christian faith as a relationship rather than a formula. In Who needs a boat already? he writes that too many Christians behave as if the Bible were some kind of math book instead of a long story of God's relationship with people through friendships with biblical figures like Adam, Abraham and Moses. The emphasis on this narrative aspect of the Bible made his books known within the emerging church scene. Miller himself does not count himself to this group. In 2007, during an interview for the Relevant Magazine podcast, Miller announced that he was working on a film with Steve Taylor. It was the film adaptation of Blue Like Jazz . When the film project threatened to fail due to a lack of funding, fans started a fundraising campaign using the crowdfunding portal kickstarter.com , which raised $ 345,992. The film was then shot in Portland and Oregon. The film premiered on March 13, 2010 at the South by Southwest Festival . A month later the film was released in US cinemas.
