Donato da Formello
Donatello , also called Donato da Formello (* probably between 1546 and 1555 in Formello ; † between 1574 and 1585 in Rome ) was an Italian painter and wood sculptor.
Life
Not much is known about the Roman artist Donatello. He was a student and assistant to Giorgio Vasari and was involved in his major commissions. There is evidence of his execution of the “Pasce oves meas - Pasture my sheep!” On the lunette of the main portal of St. Peter's Basilica in 1574–1575. In addition, a wooden statue of "John the Baptist" in the Lateran Baptistery is assigned to him today , which in later centuries was mistakenly considered the work of the sculptor Donatello (Donato di Niccolò di Betto Bardi) who worked in Florence .
