Donatus statue

The statue of Donatus in Ostbevern dates from around 1750. In the 19th and 20th centuries it was a blessing station for the local hail procession . The sandstone statue has been a listed building since 2001 .

origin

The statue of St. Donatus is said to have originally stood in the Cistercian monastery Rengering in what is now Ostbevern. In any case, a Donatus garden was listed there. This is also supported by the fact that the altar plate and base consist of different stones and therefore the altar plate was probably added later. The monastery was dissolved in the course of secularization in 1810. It is not clear whether the wayside shrine was moved away from the monastery grounds immediately after the dissolution or only in the course of the 19th century. For many years it initially stood directly on the Lienener Damm. Afterwards it was moved closer to the Schwegmann farm and provided with an open roof. An event room, the “Donatussaal”, was created from the former pigsty on Hof Schwegmann.

description

The statue is 85 cm high and stands on a 125 cm high altar-like base. The saint is depicted in a half-length portrait, resting on clouds surrounded by lightning, looking skyward: the breastplate and helmet show the soldier's attributes. The following Latin words can be read under the statue :

"Ora pro nobis
S. Martyr Donate
ut liberemur
a fulgure
et tempestate
1750"

Pray for us, holy martyr Donatus, that we may be freed from lightning and thunderstorms - 1750.

Fourth blessing station of the hail procession

The Holy Donatus of Münstereifel is here as a patron saint venerated against lightning and storms. The hail procession in Ostbevern, annually on the third Sunday after Pentecost , made its way from the parish church of St. Ambrosius to Brinkjans Krüüs , the first blessing station. From there they moved to the Lady Chapel , the second blessing station and Anna Chapel on the Lohkirchhof as the third station. Then we went back on the Lienener Damm to stop at the statue of St. Donatus as the last blessing station. From here one moved back to the parish church.

Since the 1970s, the procession has been changing, starting on Lienener Damm and Bahnhofstrasse. The only blessing station today is the Anna Chapel. The Lady Chapel was demolished in 1994 to widen the street, the blessing station at the Donatus statue was abandoned.
