Brinkjans Krüüs in the parish church of St. Ambrosius

The Brinkjans Krüüs is a wayside cross ( dialect: Krüüs for "cross") made of sandstone in Ostbevern . The grave cross from the time of the Thirty Years War , later a blessing station for the local hail procession , has been a listed building since 2001 .

description

A sandstone cross with a total height of 2.20 m stands on a base, flanked by two linden trees. The crucifix , which is secured by a support pole, is 1.20 m high and 66 cm wide. According to the shape it is a so-called Lazarus cross .

From the front, the body of Jesus Christ can be seen in the form of a bas-relief , whose hands and feet are pierced by iron nails. The year 1797 can be seen at the bottom of the bar. The IHS symbol adorns the center of the base .

An inscription made up of capital letters and numbers is carved on the back . The damaged inscription reads:
Anno 1646, May 27th, the virtuous Agata Mauritii formerly Martini Vorh .. left widow dissolved from her body and life and died as a Christian, whose souls may God mercy. Amen. Job 19. I know that my Redeemer lives, and on the last day I will rise from the earth and again will be surrounded with my skin and will see my God in my flesh.

The inscription should keep the memory of the woman who died in 1646 alive. Her husband's name must have been Mauritius (Moritz); he had married the woman after his brother Martin had left her as a widow. The four letters VORH could indicate the beginning of a family name. The Bible passage is a verse from the Old Testament book of Job ( Hi 19.25  EU ).

A square indentation in the sandstone can be seen between the first section of the inscription and the quote from the Bible. This is probably the old place for anchoring the iron support rod. Later, the pole was moved further up so that it got into the inscription.

Name and location

The cross stands at the former Dorfbrink in Ostbevern, the so-called "Brinkjans Pättken". Up until the beginning of the 20th century, behind the cross stood the Kotten "Brinkjan" or "Brinkjohann" (that is, 'Johann who lives on the Brink'), from which the name comes. So the name has to do with the location and not with ownership. The year 1797 could mean the first direction as a wayside cross or the year in which today's base was added. Before that, the cross had the function of a grave cross. It is not known which cemetery it was in or how it got to Ostbevern. In the death register of the parish of St. Ambrosius Ostbevern no "Agata" could be found for 1646. Originally it was owned by Countess Soden-Fraunhofen, a née Droste to Vischering.

First blessing station of the hail procession

The hail procession in Ostbevern started at the parish church of St. Ambrosius and had its first blessing station here (until the 1970s). It further moved to St. Mary's Chapel , the second blessing station and Anna Chapel on the Lohkirchhof for the third blessing. Then we went back on the Lienener Damm to stop at the statue of St. Donatus as a fourth blessing station. From there they moved back to the parish church.

Whereabouts

The cross was on 30 March 2001 under monument protection provided. To prevent further weathering, the original was taken to the Church of St. Ambrose , where it was placed at the entrance to the sacristy . Today there is a copy at the original location.
