features

The same-folding, compressed housings are up to 40 millimeters long. They are unequal. the vertebrae are clearly shifted towards the posterior end. The housings are elongated-egg-shaped or rounded wedge-shaped. The rear housing part is about half the length of the front housing part. The posterior and anterior dorsal margins are only slightly convex to almost straight. They form a flat angle to each other. The rear edge is more rounded than the front edge. The comparatively small ligament is a dark brown, clearly protruding band. The lock has two cardinal teeth in both flaps. In the left valve, the front cardinal tooth is split and two-pointed, the rear only weakly pronounced. In the right valve, the posterior cardinal tooth is split and two-pointed, while the anterior is small. In the right valve there are two anterior lateral teeth and one posterior lateral tooth. In the left valve, however, there is only one anterior and posterior lateral tooth. The surface line is deeply indented, the bay even extends a little over the center line.

The shell is thin but tightly skinned. Concentric growth strips and growth interruptions (flat concentric longitudinal pits) are used as ornamentation. The edge of the case is finely notched. The periostracum is thin and shiny. The color ranges from whitish, pale yellow and olive green with a lighter stripe bordered by two radial stripes of cream, orange, reddish, or reddish-brown.

Geographical distribution and habitat

The range of the species extends from the south coast of the British Isles and the coasts of the English Channel south to Morocco as well as in the Mediterranean and the Black Sea.

The species lives there in shallow water.

Taxonomy

The taxon was founded in 1791 by Johann Friedrich Gmelin as Tellina variegata . It is now generally accepted as belonging to the genus Donax Linnaeus, 1758. Occasionally it is placed in the subgenus Capsella Gray, 1851.
