The Donegal Celtic Football and Sports Club is a Northern Irish football club founded in 1970 from the west of the capital Belfast .
history
The name Celtic and the club colors refer to the legendary West Belfast club Belfast Celtic , which withdrew from Northern Irish league football in the late 1940s due to increasing violence against its - predominantly Catholic - players and fans and finally withdrew in the mid-1950s dissolved.
After many amateur years in which Donegal Celtic was denied admission to the Northern Irish professional football, the club was finally approved for the 2002/03 season for the 2nd division of the Irish League . In the 2005/06 season he finally rose from the First Division to the Premier League . In the course of the reorganization of the league system, the club was denied the license to participate in the newly founded IFA Premiership . So the Donegal Celtic FC had to start the 2008/09 season in the IFA Championship , the second highest division in Northern Irish football. Two years later they managed to return to the top division before the team had to enter the second-rate IFA Championship in 2013 after losing relegation games against Warrenpoint Town .
A few days before the start of the second division 2013/14 season, the entire coaching team and several players resigned due to the financial situation of the club. Nevertheless, the team reached eleventh place this season. In the 2015/16 season, Donegal Celtic finally rose to the third highest division with only 3 points and without having won a game. The offer of third division relegated Sport and Leisure Swifts to join the new edition of Belfast Celtic planned for the 2019/20 season was turned down in May 2019. In the 2019/20 season, Donegal Celtic plays in the fourth-rate Ballymena & Provincial Football League .
