Dong Xi

Dǒng Xí , 董 襲, also called Yuandai , was a general of the Wu Dynasty from Kuaiji. Today he is better known as a character from Luo Guanzhong's novel The Story of the Three Kingdoms . In the 13th year of Jianan (d. I. 208), Sun Quan , the founder of the Wu dynasty, led a punitive expedition against Huang Zu , a general of the Han dynasty. Huang Zhu protected the canal to Miankou with two ships covered with ox skin and manned by 1,000 archers. The hail of arrows prevented the Wu army from advancing. Dong Xi and Ling Tong had together 200 men with double armor under their command, with them they boarded and captured the ships, and killed all archers, allowing the main force to march on. Huang Zhu escaped through a gate, but the Wu forces captured him and beheaded him.

Dong Xi participated in numerous Wu battles and was known for steady success. He defeated, among others, Peng Hu , who had tens of thousands of soldiers under his command. During the battle of Ruxu (about 212 to 218) against Cao Cao , Don Xi was stationed at the mouth of the Ruxu by the belligerent Sun Quan . During the night, Cao Cao's army rushed in, which eventually put Dong Xi's five-story ship in danger. Dong Xi's officers panicked and fled until, following tradition, he shouted to them: “How can you, as generals with responsibility, flee against the rebels? Anyone who dares will be beheaded! ”For fear, none of them dared to disobey, and both Dong Xi and his generals died in the battle.
