Dongjiao ( Chinese  東郊 鎮  /  东郊 镇 , Pinyin Dōngjiāo Zhèn , "Eastern suburb") is a large community 4 km east of the independent city of Wenchang in the Chinese province of Hainan, which is directly subordinate to the provincial government . Dongjiao is located on the Wencheng (文 城镇) opposite side of Qinglan Port and is connected to the city via the Qinglan Bridge, which opened in 2012. The large municipality has an area of ​​88 km² and 48,080 inhabitants, 43,835 of them in the villages (February 2017).

The everyday connection between Wencheng and Dongjiao was originally maintained by small ferry boats for eight to 10 people, and about the same large cargo boats, sometimes motorized, often rowed, even on the flat spots at Dongjiao punted . In connection with the construction of the Wenchang Cosmodrome , which required a truck-compatible road with as little bends as possible to transport the rocket stages from the port of Qinglan to the spacecraft assembly buildings , a wide bridge was built over the port basin. The foundation stone was laid on March 8, 2010, the bridge was closed on September 25, 2012, and the “Great Qinglan Bridge” (清澜 大桥) was opened to traffic on December 18, 2012. The construction cost was 595 million yuan.

The bridge is 1828 m long with the driveways, of which the actual bridge over the harbor basin is 548 m. The main opening in the middle for shipping measures 300 m, with a clear height of 25 m above the water level. It is a cable-stayed bridge suspended from two 106 m high pylons , 34 m wide, with three lanes in each direction and pedestrian paths on both sides. The maximum speed on the bridge is 80 km / h, which allows it to be crossed within 5 minutes. The bridge is extremely vibration-proof and can withstand wind speeds of up to 138 km / h, i.e. a category 1 cyclone . Wenchang is on the Wangwu - Wenjiao - rejection and is therefore highly prone to earthquakes. While in the rest of China bridges are usually built to withstand earthquakes measuring 8–8.5 on the Richter scale , the Qinglan Bridge is designed for earthquakes measuring 9.

Coconut economy

About half of the coconuts produced in Hainan come from Wenchang, and within Wenchang mainly from Dongjiao. In the area of ​​the large community, a total of 4533 hectares of land are planted with 2 million coconut palms, which generates 78 million yuan per year (as of 2017). The coconuts are processed on site and represent the main economic mainstay of the large community. There are 77 companies in Dongjiao, where foods such as desiccated coconut or coconut water are made from coconuts , including industrial coconut oil , 36 companies produce coconut fiber products (mainly mats and mattresses) , two factories produce activated charcoal from coconut shells and 13 factories manufacture handicraft products from carved coconuts. In 2015, these 128 factories employed a total of 12,000 people and generated 600 million yuan.

The coconut forests are also used as a tourist resource. In 1989, one year after Hainan was detached from Guangdong and made an independent province, a beach area in the south of the large community, in the area of ​​the administrative village of Jianhuashan, was designated as a holiday area, which was then the first on the island. Hotels were built, and around 1995/97, at the height of corruption under President Jiang Zemin and Provincial Governor Ruan Chongwu , the " Dongjiao Coconut Forest Landscape" (东郊 椰林 风景区) also had the Dongjiao Coconut Grove Scenic Area known to be its most profitable time. After that, the number of overnight stays fell again. In 2002 the then 20 hotels with a total of 1200 beds accommodated around 192,000 domestic and foreign guests. Today said landscape area is considered natural and calm.
