Donzellinho do Castello

Donzellinho do Castello is a red wine variety . It is an old, indigenous variety from northern Portugal . It was described in the Douro valley as early as the 15th century . Today smaller plantings are also known in South Africa . The early maturing variety avoids excessive heat. It results in light red wines with a sweet fragrance and delicate taste. In the Portuguese region of Trás-os-Montes , it is popular despite its low yields and is also used in port wine .
