The double lock Magdeburg Neustadt is an unfinished lock construction in the city of Magdeburg in Saxony-Anhalt .

description

The lock structure is located in the lock canal between kilometers 1.8 and 2.2 to the east of the Magdeburg industrial port or west of the Elbe . The lock was built in connection with a planned Elbe river level at the Herrenkrugpark . The barrage was planned to enable shipping on the Elbe over the cathedral rock and the Magdeburg city route even when the water level is low . Due to the Second World War and the subsequent abandonment of the plans, the construction of the barrage was never realized.

The lock itself was largely completed in 1942. It is a double lock with two parallel chambers that would have made simultaneous locks possible. With a length of 325 meters and 25 meters wide, it was the largest inland waterway lock in Europe at the time of its completion. It had lifting gates . It was damaged in the World War and afterwards partially dismantled and never rebuilt.
