List of apple varieties |
The double melon apple , also known as the double prince's apple , is an old North German apple variety. It is a triploid cross of Prinzenapfel as a mother and an unknown father variety. The part of the name “double” refers to the significantly larger apples, which a Swiss fruit growing expert described in 1913 as “the largest known fruit”. There are still many local names in use, such as Hasenkopf, Walzenapfel, which are also used for the Prinzenapfel.
