The Dorade fan is a piece of equipment that is used to ventilate the interior of ships and yachts . This special fan prevents water from entering the ship with the fresh air. It is named after the sailing yacht Dorade , built in 1930 , on which it was used for the first time. The water-separating fan was designed by the American Rod Stephens .

construction

The air flows through a rotatable wind hood (fan head) into an elongated box. The ventilation duct leading through the deck into the interior is not located directly under the hood, but is offset to the side and protrudes over the upper edge of the deck. This "chicane", which the air flow has to pass, ensures that spray water that has penetrated with the air flow is separated out and thus cannot get into the interior. The separated water can flow off to the deck through small openings in the fan in the hood area.

function

The air scoop is turned into the (driving) wind so that fresh air is pushed into the interior. By using a second Dorade fan, the position of the scoop is rotated by 180 ° compared to the first and which, for aerodynamic reasons , develops a suction effect, a desired air circulation is created between the two fans in the ship's interior .
