The Dorand AR.1 was a French military aircraft .

development

The AR.1 goes back to the DO.1 of the same designer, some machines of which were supposed to go to Russia in 1914 , which the outbreak of war prevented; the aircraft were incorporated into the French air force. Overall, however, they did not prove very successful and were soon replaced by the Farman pressure propeller machines.

When these became increasingly obsolete from 1916 and replacement became necessary, most French aircraft companies could still not get used to the use of pull propellers in two-seat aircraft. The Section Technique de l'Aeronautique (STAe.) In Chalais-Meudon, which was then headed by Dorand, then developed the AR.1 A2 as an example construction from the DO.1.

The design had some unusual design features, such as negative staggered wings and a fuselage resting on struts above the lower wing. The power unit was the only in-line engine from Renault available in large numbers at the time, which had a front radiator and an exhaust manifold above the upper wing.

The tests were completed in September 1916 and the AR.1 was in service from April 1917. The further developed AR.2 was created later . Both models were underpowered and were withdrawn from units on the Western Front from 1918 onwards. In addition to the French aviation forces, the American expeditionary force had also acquired 22 AR.1 and 120 AR.2.
