Dorenbeck

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dorenbeck is a desolate, fallen town near Schmallenberg in the Hochsauerlandkreis ( North Rhine-Westphalia ). Its exact location is not recorded in the sources.

The place was probably in the Dornbecke, in the Grafschafter Tal , about one and a half kilometers from Schmallenberg. A documented fiefdom of the noble lords of Grafschaft existed here as an inhabited farm in the 13th and possibly also in the 14th century. The first documentary mention of the property was in a document from 1375; the Grafschaft monastery bought meadows and land there that had been used by Claus Bochem zu Schmallenberg. The judge in Warstein testified in 1413 that Hermann Orten and Hinrich Semenich, a manor that was healed, Durnbeke vnde is twysschen Grasschap vnde Smalenborg with the consent of the deceased liege lord Knight Johannes von Grafschaft, sold.

Like many other places, the place fell victim to the great desolation process in the late Middle Ages . It must have been a creeping, slow process. This began around 1300. It is possible that this process lasted until the middle of the 15th century. The downfall of this urban settlement is probably connected with the development of the urban center of Schmallenberg. Another reason was plague epidemics and the need of the residents to seek refuge in the city.
