The village church Torno (also Jesus Christ Church ) is a Protestant church in Leippe-Torno , a town in the Saxon town of Lauta . The church belongs to the parish Lauta, in the parish of Schlesische Oberlausitz of the district Görlitz of the Evangelical Church Berlin-Brandenburg-Silesian Upper Lusatia .

history

After the end of the Second World War , Leippe-Torno called for its own church. The Christians from Leippe-Torno and Johannisthal visited the town church Lauta and the church St. Laurentius in Lauta at this time . It was planned to build a church in the more populous part of Torno, where at that time the Baptist congregation already had a prayer room that was also used by the Protestant residents.

In 1950 the church property was made available by the Leippe-Tornos family, who had already donated the property for the local cemetery in 1934. Numerous residents of the town volunteered to take part in the construction, and the church was one of the first new church buildings in the GDR . The foundation stone was laid in the fall of 1950; the topping-out ceremony was celebrated in the spring of 1951. The church was built according to the model of the church in Lauta, but was kept simpler. The construction was financed by donations; Due to the lack of funds, a bell tower was omitted. The church was consecrated on May 8 or 12, 1952. It now belonged to the Evangelical Church Berlin-Brandenburg.

In 2008 - shortly after the incorporation of Leippe-Torno into Lauta - the church was partially renovated, with carpets being laid in the interior and the electrical system being replaced. After two months of renovation, the church was reopened in July 2008 with a festive service.

Interior and equipment

The interior of the church is kept simple. The simple altarpiece shows a cross with the words "Jesus Christ yesterday and today and the same in eternity". The pews in the church date from the time of the consecration. Room dividers separate the altar from an anteroom. There is a gallery opposite the altar.

The church has had an organ since 1972, which is located in the anteroom of the church next to a smaller altar. It replaced a harmonium that had been used until then. Electric night storage heating was installed in the building as early as the 1970s .

Bell cage and bells

For lack of money, the church was built without a tower. For the consecration of the church, the bells of the church were therefore hung on a wooden belfry on the church property. The first bell was probably on loan; It was not until 1955 that donations made it possible to buy two chilled cast iron bells, one of which was used to ring the bell. The belfry had become dilapidated in 1975 and had to be removed. A wooden shed served as a replacement. Plans that were made around 1975 and provided for a massive bell tower with an entrance to the church were not implemented, even if the building would have "made the building look more like a church".

Since November 2010 there has been a free-standing wooden belfry next to the church, manufactured by the mission court in Lieske . It replaced the simple wooden shed that had served as a bell chair replacement since 1975. The cost of the bell cage amounted to around 13,000 euros. It carries two bells: a chilled cast iron bell (Ton d´´) from 1954 and a smaller bell, which is on permanent loan from the Lieske Mission and can be heard at baptisms, among other things. The second larger chilled cast iron bell with the tone h´ was removed in 2008 for static reasons and is placed next to the church entrance. In contrast to the earlier belfry, the new building has an electric bell.
