The Protestant village church Volkstedt is in the Volkstedt district of the city of Rudolstadt in the Saalfeld-Rudolstadt district in Thuringia .

history

The church , built in the 12th century, was completely bombed by American bomber units during an air raid on Volkstedt on April 10, 1945 (three days before the occupation) at the end of World War II and burned to the ground. The nave was rebuilt in a simplified form in 1949/50 - initially without a tower. The tower followed later, with a simple roof (formerly a baroque dome). After the fall of the Wall , the church was completely renovated.

A stone tablet with the following text is embedded in the west facade of the church: "Built in the 12th century. Rebuilt in 1739. Renewed in 1938. Burned down 10.4.1945. Newly built in 1949/50". The board is so high that you can only find it if you look for it.

The Gothic staggered altar from the 15th century, which comes from the Saalfeld school, has been preserved. He is assigned to the famous Zeigerheim master. At the instigation of the pastor at the time, the altar was relocated in 1943 and thus saved. There was justified fear of a bombing of the Saale dam wall with flooding of the Saale valley, similar to the catastrophe caused by the destruction of the Edertal dam in May 1943.

In the summer of 1788 Friedrich Schiller lived in the house of the Cantor Unbehauen in Volkstedt. Above the entrance door of the Evangelical Parish Office opposite the church is a plaque with the following inscription: "Here was the house where Friedrich Schiller lived in 1788".
