Doris Hare

Doris Hare MBE (born March 1, 1905 in Bargoed , † May 30, 2000 in Northwood ) was a British actress .

Life

Hare grew up as the daughter of theater owners in South Wales. In the 1930s she took on various roles in major theaters and made her first appearance in the film business in the middle of the decade. While she mainly played theater, she also took on smaller roles, especially in film comedies . In addition, she conducted the radio program Shipmates Ashore, which was intended for the merchant navy, for the BBC .

Hare gained greater popularity in the 1970s through the role of Mabel Ethel Butler in the television series On the Buses , when she inherited Cicely Courtneidge as the mother of the protagonist played by Reg Varney from the second season of the series . The series was so successful that three film offshoots were shot. After the end of the series in 1973, other leading roles in film comedies followed before she returned to the West End theater district .
