Dornier Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dornier SAR (Do SAR) was the development of a Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) at Dornier . Based on the development of the radar for the European Remote Sensing Satellite ESR 1 , Dornier built a conversion kit into a Transall aircraft C-160 , which was tested in flights together with the Wehrtechnischen Dienststelle 61 (WTD 61) .

description

The special thing about the system based on the interferometry principle were the new algorithms for the highly precise evaluation and representation of the radar measurement as digital terrain models in 3D. With this kit, Dornier offered terrain mapping as a service on the international market. The countries Indonesia then laid the foundations for their modern national map series in flights with the Do SAR from 1997 to 1998 and Thailand afterwards, whereby Dornier also sold these countries ground stations for independent evaluation of the radar images and digitization into maps. Short and partial flights were also carried out in Denmark , Switzerland and Austria .

When there were no other customers, the program was discontinued in 2002. However, the technology and know-how flowed into SOSTAR-X , which is to be the basis for the radar in the EuroHawk project .
