Dorotea de Chopitea SMDB (born June 4, 1816 in Santiago de Chile , † April 3, 1891 in Barcelona ) was a Chilean Catholic, philanthropist , especially benefactress of the Salesians Don Bosco ( Salesian co-worker Don Bosco ).

Life

She came from an aristocratic family. At the age of 16 she married the Spanish banker Josep Maria Serra Muñoz. After six years of marriage, she went to Spain with her husband, who was appointed consul of the Chilean government in Barcelona.

Widowed in 1882, Dorotea de Chopitea began to found hospices, homes and a school. During this time she corresponded a lot with Don Bosco and later with his successor Michael Rua . As a result, she also supported the missionary work of the Salesians of Don Bosco in Chile, especially in Santiago de Chile and Talca . In Barcelona she financed the establishment of the vocational schools in Sarriá , the Salesian College in San José and other youth welfare organizations.
