Ulrich Juergens

Ulrich Jürgens (born July 8, 1962 ) is a German geographer and professor at the University of Siegen .

Career

Ulrich Jürgens studied geography , economics , political science and history at the Technical University of Braunschweig from 1981 to 1987 . The topic of his diploma thesis was The nationally important educational and research institutions in Braunschweig. Size, importance and significance for the urban community . In 1988 he completed his doctorate at Kiel University , which he completed in 1991. The topic of the dissertation was multiracial residential areas in South African cities . Jürgens then stayed at Kiel University until 2003, where he was successively a scientific employee , university assistant, senior assistant and, most recently, in 2002, an "extraordinary professor". On April 22, 1998 his habilitation took place with the topic: Retail trade in the new federal states - the competitive situation between the inner city and "Green Meadow" , illustrated by the developments in Leipzig , Rostock and Cottbus . From 2003 to 2004 he was briefly at the University of Mannheim and then took on a substitute professorship C3 / W2 for human geography at the University of Siegen.

Research and interests

Jürgen's research focuses on urban geography ( segregation processes , urban blight, suburbanization , third world problems , city ​​marketing ), population geography ("old" people), economic geography (geography of retail; port development) and sustainable urban development (waste behavior). His regional focus is on southern Africa , in Germany's new federal states and in Western Europe .
