Dorret Boomsma (born November 18, 1957 in Huizen ) is a Dutch psychologist, known for twin research .

Life

Boomsma received her diploma in psychology from the Free University of Amsterdam in 1983 and her master's degree from the University of Colorado that same year . In 1992 she received her PhD from the Free University of Amsterdam. In 1998 she was given a full professorship in biological psychology. In 2014 she became an academy professor.

She and her predecessor Orlebeke built a database of 30,000 pairs of twins in the Netherlands, and she used it for genetic and psychological studies. For example, she examined the role of genetic and environmental factors in the intelligence quotient (which rises relatively late after the first few years of school) and personality traits such as a tendency to depression, anxiety, or hyperactivity (which, in contrast to intelligence, develop relatively early). In the same way, she examined the development of addiction tendencies (alcohol, tobacco), the proportions of genetic and environmental factors in behavior-relevant components of the EEG and in cardiovascular risks. Boosma also contributed to the further development of statistical methods.

In 2001 she received the Spinoza Prize . In 2008 she received an ERC Advanced Grant. She is a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences. The Academia Europaea it belongs since 2012 as a full member. In 2012 she received funding of 27.6 million euros from the Dutch research organization NWO for her twin research.
