Dotcom death

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dotcomtod was a German website for information about the economic situation of companies, especially media companies and those of the New Market . The website, operated by an anonymous collective, was online from 2001 to 2004, a relaunch under the name “BooCompany” took place in 2005 and was discontinued after a while.

history

In 2001, under the impression that the dot-com bubble had burst , three friends from Berlin who operated under the pseudonyms “Lanu”, “Joman” and “Boo” developed the concept of Dotcomtod. The technical implementation was done by third parties. The domain registration was also carried out in the name of a third party. Dotcomtod was presented to the public at cebit 2001. In 2002 she received 1st place in the alternative media award in the Internet category .

There was a tone of cynicism or very black humor on the website. For some time the website was seen as an indicator of where the next big bankruptcy was to be expected. In the first year, a dispute with frog design led to the website being temporarily shut down.

There were three categories of messages on the website:

  • Boo (negative message with reference to the source),
  • Insider (negative news without reference to source),
  • Final (news of a corporate bankruptcy). For the entry of such a post, which was verified by an anonymous team before it was activated, there were points, so that there was a permanent competition between the users in the naming of "exit-oriented company news". The whole thing was set up like a board game.

Users were referred to as Sentinel (guardians). One of them was Don Alphonso , whose novel Liquide was published in 2003. Meedia described the book as the essence of Don Alphonso's work there and as a novel about the New Economy , which aptly and with the usual malice sums up the scene: He "seemed to be sitting under the desk of the investors and CEOs and taking notes".

The website was closed in 2004 following legal disputes.

In 2005 a relaunch took place under the name "BooCompany". However, the website could no longer build on the success of its predecessor and was ultimately discontinued.
