Doug DeWitt (* 14. September 1961 as Douglas Anthony Ittaglio in Youngstown , Ohio ) is a retired American professional boxer and former world champion of the WBO middleweight.

Boxing career

He started boxing at the age of 15 and won 35 of 39 amateur fights. At the age of 18, he turned professional and moved to Yonkers , New York State. After 25 fights, including 22 wins and two draws, he won on February 17, 1984 by winning points against Mike Tinley (14-1), the middleweight title of the television station ESPN .

On August 30, 1985, he lost on points to Robbie Sims (23-4), the half-brother of boxing legend Marvelous Marvin Hagler . He also suffered a point defeat against Milton McCrory (28-1) on July 13, 1986. On October 17, 1986, he boxed for the North American Championship of the NABF , but had to admit defeat Thomas Hearns (42-2).

Subsequent victories against Lenny LaPaglia (29-4), Tony Thornton (17-0) and Alberto González (17-5) gave him a WBA world title chance against Sumbu Kalambay (45-3 ) in Monte Carlo on November 8, 1988 ), but lost to this prematurely in the seventh round. But already in his next fight on April 18, 1989 in Atlantic City , he was allowed to fight for the world title of the newly founded world association WBO. He had to play against Robbie Sims again and won over twelve rounds on points. He then defended the title early on January 15, 1990 in Atlantic City against Matthew Hilton (30-1), former IBF world light middleweight champion.

In his second title defense on April 29, 1990, he had to give up prematurely to the British Nigel Benn (25-1). After another defeat in December 1992 to James Toney (32-0), he ended his career.

He then became a boxing coach and runs a boxing club named after him in Scarsdale , New York.
