Doug Dye
Douglas Winton Dye ( July 12, 1921 - December 18, 2005 ) was a New Zealand microbiologist .
biography
Dye graduated in 1944 with a Bachelor of Agricultural Science at the Massey Agricultural College . He started working at the DSIR in 1946 . and spent the first ten years of his career as a pathologist studying pathogenic bacteria on crops in New Zealand. From 1956 to 1958 he studied in Edinburgh and graduated with a thesis on the taxonomy of the genus Xanthomonas for a PhD. This work demonstrated the lack of phenotypic diversity between specific pathogens in this genus. This led to the pathovar nomenclature used internationally for bacteria that cause disease in plants .
He clarified the relationships between the groups of bacteria represented by the genera Erwinia and Corynebacterium . Dye served on several committees on the taxonomy of bacteria, including the International Committee on the Systematics of Bacteria . He was involved in the complete revision of the bacteria names in the Approved Lists of Names of Bacteria . In the Committee on Taxonomy of Plant Pathogenic Bacteria of the International Society of Plant Pathologists , he developed the International Standards for Naming Pathovars (International Standards for Naming Pathovars). From 1979 to 1983 he was head of this committee.
From the late 1960s he was head of a growing bacteriological department in the plant diseases division of the DSIR. Dye's collection of bacterial cultures, established in 1951, developed into today's ICMP culture collection , which is kept at Landcare Research in Tamaki.
He retired in December 1983 and died on December 18, 2005.
