Doug Stone
Doug Stone (born June 19, 1956 in Marietta , Georgia ; real name: Doug Brooks ) is an American country musician.
Beginnings
After his parents' divorce, Doug grew up with two brothers with his father, who lived in a trailer park. He started a band with a couple of friends. After dropping out of school, he kept himself afloat with odd jobs. But the main part of his life was music. He set up a small recording studio in his own mobile home. During an appearance in 1987, he met Phyllis Bennett, who a little later became his manager and brought him together with producer Doug Johnson. In 1989, a record deal was signed with the Nashville- based Epic label. To avoid confusion with Garth Brooks , he changed his name to Doug Stone.
Career
His first single, I'd better Off (In A Pine Box) , released in 1990 , made it into the top 10 and earned him a Grammy nomination. His debut album, released a little later, reached platinum status . Three released singles were also successful, including his first number 1 hit In A Different Light . It was primarily these songs full of self-pity that made him known as a potty singer in the country scene.
In 1992 his second album, I Thought It Was You , was released, which again sold very well and went platinum. The released single A Jukebox With A Country Song reached number one on the country charts. He went on an extensive tour with his newly formed group The Stone Age . His successes continued. His third album, From The Heart , went gold in 1992 and the single Too Busy Beeing In Love became his third top hit. In the same year, however, he had to undergo four bypass operations.
His health problems initially did not affect his career. Further hits were produced at short intervals. The albums More Love and Greatest Hits were awarded gold. His streak of success continued even after switching to the Columbia label. Only at the end of the decade did sales decline. In the spring of 1998 he crashed in an airplane that he had flown himself, but survived with a lot of luck. In 1999 he switched to the Atlantic label.
