history

The immigrant Samuel Douglas died in Jamaica in 1799 . In his will he ordered the establishment of a school in Newton Stewart and endowed the project with a financial base from his estate. The start of construction was delayed until 1834. The Earl of Galloway previously made a plot of land available. The Edinburgh architect John Henderson is responsible for the design . Douglas House no longer houses a school.

description

The building is located off the A714 at Ghyll Crescent on the northern edge of Newton Stewart. On the north side of the classical building is an older two-story school building. The one-story building is symmetrical and has an elongated floor plan on a raised base. The south-east exposed front is seven axes wide. While exposed brickwork made of red sandstone blocks was built on this side of the building , dark stone cut into blocks of varying sizes was used on the other parts of the building. The central entrance portal, designed with pilasters and combat windows, is accessible via two stairs. A cornice runs around above the elongated lattice windows . The building closes with a slate-covered platform roof . The central clock tower with pilasters and a balustrade , which is part of a decorative arcade, is striking . The side facades are three axes wide.
