The columbarium is housed in a round tower that is about 8.5 m high and has an inside diameter of about 4.75 m, so that the walls are about 1.12 m thick. Inside there are eleven rows of nest boxes, each row has 32 boxes. Above this, the interior tapers like a cantilever vault to a small opening that allows birds to enter. The Ballybeg dovecote is one of the finest examples of its kind.
