Dover and Winnipiseogee Railroad

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Dover and Winnipiseogee Railroad is a former railroad company in New Hampshire ( United States ). It was first established on July 2, 1839, but did not start building a railroad and was disbanded. Instead, on July 2, 1847, the Cocheco Railroad (partially Cochecho Railroad ) was founded, which wanted to build the route from Dover to the main line of the Boston, Concord and Montreal Railroad on Lake Winnipiseogee . Construction of the standard-gauge line began in the summer of 1848 and in 1851 the 45.2 kilometer section to Alton Bay was opened. The construction was not carried out for financial reasons and was only carried out decades later by the Lake Shore Railroad .

The railway company went bankrupt in 1861 and on July 1, 1862, the Cocheco Railroad was reorganized into Dover and Winnipiseogee Railroad . The Boston and Maine Railroad leased the train from November 1, 1863 for 50 years and bought it for good in early 1892. The railway company was then dissolved. The Dover – Alton Bay railway line has been completely closed since 1995.
