Doxocopa agathina is a butterfly ( butterfly ) from the family of Nymphalidae (Nymphalidae).

features

The wingspan of the moth is about 50 millimeters. The species is characterized by a strong sexual dimorphism . In the males, the upper side of the wing is iridescent over a large area, apart from a few small white and yellow spots near the apex , whereas in the females it is brownish and provided with very broad orange-yellow longitudinal stripes that shine through to the underside of the wing in a weakened form. The underside of the wings of the males is marbled gray-brown. The green proboscis is striking .

Distribution, subspecies and habitat

  • Doxocopa agathina vacuna ( Godart , 1824), in the state of Rio de Janeiro and in Paraguay .

The species mainly inhabits rainforests from the plains up to an altitude of 1200 meters.

Way of life

The males like to fly in the sun at forest edges or dried up river beds. They sometimes suckle on damp places in the earth, overripe fruits, carrion or excrement. The females spend almost all of their time in the treetops. The caterpillars feed on the leaves of hackberry trees ( Celtis ).
