The Dr. vom Bruch bridge in the East Frisian district town of Leer is a bascule bridge made of reinforced concrete . The building, which was erected between 1926 and 1927, is around 100 meters long and is a listed building. It crosses the Leda river and connects Nessestrasse on the Nesserland peninsula with Königsstrasse in the center of Leer. The bridge is named after the mayor of Leer Erich vom Bruch (born October 29, 1885 in Solingen; † May 7, 1933 in Leer), during whose term of office (1920–1933) it was built. Bruch is an early victim of National Socialism . He committed suicide after the Nazis in Leer unjustly accused him of irregularities in the municipal financial system and wanted to examine them in court.

history

The construction of the bridge is related to the relocation of the Galli cattle market . Like all other cattle markets, this was held at the horse market and the Blinke until 1927. But as more and more cattle were offered at the cattle market, they looked for another solution, because the cattle had to be driven through the entire city, which resulted in constant pollution. The city administration therefore decided to relocate the market and build a new cattle market on the Nesse peninsula. This was first used on March 2, 1927 and was inaugurated on June 15, 1927. In connection with this construction work, the bascule bridge to the balance and to the town hall, today's "Dr.-vom-Bruch-Brücke", was built. The city announced the construction work on February 4, 1926. On July 20, 1927, the topping-out ceremony for the bridge house was celebrated, and on October 11, 1927, the building, which was henceforth called the Rathausbrücke, was completed. In the spring of 1949 the city decided to rename the bridge "Dr.-vom-Bruch-Brücke".
