history

The construction of a steamer for Lake Victoria was suggested by Carl Peters . At about the same time as Hermann von Wissmann , Peters had started to raise money for such a steamer, and had also been supported by funds from the anti-slavery pilot of the anti-slavery committee.

In 1892 the boat was built at the Hamburg shipyard Janssen & Schmilinsky under construction number 298. The Dr. Carl Peters had a length of 23.28 m and a displacement of 60 t.

In the same yard's boat Hermann Wissmann, who was already in 1890 Hermann Wissmann was built.

The Dr. Carl Peters was intended to be the governor's steamer on Lake Victoria for the colonial administration of German East Africa. Parts of the steamer arrived in Bagamoyo , other parts were actually transported to Lake Victoria by porters, but the vehicle was never reassembled. The boat's steam engine was sold to an ice factory and the hull was converted into a schooner for transporting coal on the Indian Ocean . The whereabouts of the coal saver is unknown.
